Flycatchers and Kingbirds

← Back to Birds

The family Tyrannidae is one of the largest and most diverse families of birds in the Americas, encompassing kingbirds, phoebes, pewees, empidonax flycatchers, and numerous tropical species. Most are primarily insectivorous, capturing flying insects in midair or gleaning prey from foliage and branches. They inhabit a remarkable variety of environments, from open grasslands and desert scrub to dense tropical rainforests and high-elevation forests. Many species have relatively subdued plumage, making vocalizations, behavior, and habitat especially important for identification. Kingbirds are particularly known for their aggressive territorial behavior, often chasing much larger birds away from their nesting areas. Although many flycatchers remain widespread, some species face conservation challenges associated with habitat loss, declining insect populations, and environmental change.
